Intense and driving, Tsunami is filled with building tension and release depicting its title's namesake. Aggressive rhythmic figures and a mix of 4/4 and 5/4 meters add to the suspense of this piece. The use of tone clusters, syncopated rhythmic groupings, and layering of instrument textures add to the intensity. Vince Gassi composed this work in the spring of 2004, prior to the tsunami that would devastate Thailand and neighboring countries. A highlight among this year's new works and a fantastic contest selection!
