Master craftsman, Brian Balmages has again fashioned an exemplary work for thecontemporary concert band. Its opening movement, Overture, is flashy and vivacious, relentlessly driven by pulsating percussion and brassy fanfares. Movement 2, Ballad, features the calm serenity of free-flowing solo lines, musing among rich tonal colors. The final movement, Fusion, lives up to the work's namesake, borrowing melodic and stylistic elements from rock, funk, andjazz, to meld with classic band idioms for an explosive and celebrative finale.
