** Excellence in Choral Literature - 2004 **

From the editor: "'Ave Jesu Christe' was originally published in 1613 in his second collection of choral motets, Cantiones Sacrae Octonis Vocibus. These eight-voice motets were not published with continuo until 1625. The continuo part in the Cantiones a 8, possibly by Philips himself, gives not only a basso seguente, but also a canto seguente, a part for the right hand. Both hands of the continuo duplicate very precisely the dominant outer voice parts. I have provided a keyboard reduction based upon this continuo. The motet may be performed with or without the support of organ."
